MOHYAL MITTER
NINE POINT ACTION PLAN
Dear Brothers & Sisters, It was my great privilege and pleasure to welcome many of you at the Annual General Meeting held on 10th May 2009 at Mohyal Foundation Complex, New Delhi. I was deeply overwhelmed by the love and affection bestowed on me by all of you and was heartened by your unanimous approval for the various projects and causes espoused by GMS. By Grace of God Almighty, GMS today stands at the peak - its image, prestige, credibility and financial stability has never been as high as it is today – thanks to the co-operation and support from all of you. Personally, for me, it is a moment of great fulfilment with the realisation that our vision, focus, dedication, devotion and sincere inputs have ultimately yielded the desired results. I am very happy that besides the progress and development, the seed of “love” which we have sown in the community has blossomed into a widespread goodwill, unity and solidarity and the participation of the youth in the various cultural events bodes well for the future of the our fraternity. I strongly feel and wish to exhort all of you to come forward and be a part of our “endeavours” and have the satisfaction of having done your best for the progress of our community which we all so love and cherish. I would seek your indulgence and cooperation to the following important points of action which I had raised in my speech while welcoming you to the AGM: 1. GMS LIFE MEMBERSHIP: GMS must be broad based and it is my wish and dream that at least one member of every household should be a Life Member of GMS and at least one copy of Mohyal Mitter must reach every address / house to maintain close co-ordination between the community and GMS. 2. DONATIONS: It is my experience that whenever a Project is placed before the community – like Mohyal Ashram Haridwar, Mohyal Sewa Sadan or Mohyal Ashram, Vrindavan, there is tremendous response of donors for the rooms as well as the Langar Fund. I fully appreciate the same but it is my desire that every Mohyal family must contribute, howsoever small, according to its resources, some donation regularly, with a view to have satisfaction of emotional involvement with the apex body. 3 . WIDOW FUND: I am deeply concerned about the plight of our widow sisters, who not only need financial assistance, but emotional support as well. I appeal to all local Sabhas to involve themselves in this task and be ever available to wipe the tears of these unfortunate sisters, in addition to the aid being given by the GMS. I also appeal to the affluent section of the Mohyals to come forward and adopt one or more widows. Currently GMS is giving financial assistance of Rs.6000/- p.a. to each widow and this amount is not too big for the affluent section of our community. Young widows also need to be supported to be self reliant by training them in various professional courses so that they do not remain dependent for ever on the crutches of the GMS or Local Sabhas. GMS will welcome any support in this direction, besides their own resources. 4. NEEDY STUDENTS: GMS is doing its best for the students from weaker section of the Society both for primary education as well as higher studies. Again I would wish that affluent members of the community should come forward and adopt the bright students particularly for higher education. We must ensure that no Mohyal Youth who has aspiration for higher education or higher professional career is deprived to achieve his or her goal for want of funds and the same should be provided either by GMS or affluent section of the community by adopting bright children. 5. MATRIMONIAL PROBLEMS: GMS is doing its best to solve this problem by holding matrimonial melas. But there is a section of the community specially in the rural areas which needs financial support as well to solemnize the marriages of their daughters. I appeal to all Local Sabhas to spread out in their areas of jurisdiction particularly in the villages, to address less fortunate brothers to arrange Samoohik Vivahs or community marriages and the GMS would be too willing to extend reasonable financial assistance for this purpose. 6. MOHYAL MITTER is a very important media of communication between GMS and the community and though it has made it to the Limca Book of records it is still in the red and we should make it completely self reliant by arranging advertisements from Industry and Business Houses to augment its financial resources. I sincerely appeal to all my brothers who are involved in Industry and Business to come forward and release advertisements in the community’s magazine. I am requesting Mr. O.P. Mohan and his team to work out reasonable advertisement tariff and publish it in the Mitter and also convey it to the Local Sabhas for securing advertisements. 7. MOHYAL ASHRAM VRINDAVAN: GMS has paid the entire cost of land amounting to Rs.2.5 crore from its resources. The cost of construction of the building is expected to be around Rs.3.5 crores which I feel should be donated by the community. A sum of almost Rs.1.5 crore has already been donated /promised. We the Mohyals as a community are very magnanimous as has been proved by the donations given for the Mohyal Ashram Haridwar and langar funds of Mohyal Ashram Haridwar and Vrindavan. I would once again appeal to all of you to come forward and donate generously – even the cost of one brick donated by any one will be welcome and give him the satisfaction of having contributed in building the magnificent project. 8. MOHYAL YOUTH: It is very imperative that the youth of the community should be encouraged and involved in the community’s affairs. While I attend the various Mohyal Milan Melas I feel greatly pleased to see the young boys and girls taking active part, with zeal and enthusiasm, in cultural programmes and in making the arrangements and other deliberations. The future of the community lies with them and we have to encourage them in every manner possible. We are proposing to hold the next Youth Camp near Dehradun from 2nd to 4th October 2009 and I would wish that large number of youth attend this Camp and deliberate on the progress and development of the community. 9. VOLUNTEERS: We want more people to volunteer their services for the social work with humility and dedication and focus on the unity and solidarity in the community which must be maintained at all levels. I would suggest that under the aegis of Youth Wing of GMS, a volunteer force is created to be entrusted with all the leg work required for the community’s development. Jai Mohyal ! B.D. Bali
PROCEEDINGS OF THE GENERAL BODY MEETING HELD ON SUNDAY MAY 10, 2009 Hoisting of the Mohyal Flag and Mohyal Prayer
The meeting was called to order, after the unfurling of the Mohyal flag by the President, Rzd. B.D. Bali, followed by the Mohyal prayer and the lighting of the traditional lamp by the dignitaries on the dais. About 200 members were present. Tributes to Departed Mohyals At the outset, tributes were paid to the departed souls of the members of the fraternity, who had left for their heavenly abode since the last meeting held in March 2007, by observing two minutes’ silence. Ratification of the Proceedings of the last AGM After the formal welcome by Mehta O.P. Mohan, Senior Vice President, the Secretary General, Shri D.V. Mohan, gave the highlights of the proceedings of the last General Body meeting held on the 18th March 2007, (which had been published in the Mohyal Mitter of April 2007) and sought the approval of the General Body for the ratification of the proceedings. The meeting unanimously ratified the same. Presentation of Report by the Secretary General The Secretary General, thereafter, presented his detailed report on the activities and achievements of the General Mohyal Sabha since the last meeting, a copy of which had already been circulated to the members. He read out the report, in full, interspersed with applause from the members, whenever the significant achievements of GMS were mentioned. The house unanimously adopted the report, in toto. (Report published on pages 8 to12) Audited Balance Sheets and Income & Expenditure Statements for the financial years 2006-07 & 2007-08 and Budget Estimates for the financial year 2009-10 The Secretary Finance, Shri S.K. Chhibber, presented the audited Balance Sheets and Income & Expenditure Statements for the years 2006-07 & 2007-08 and the Budget Estimates for the financial year 2009-10. He explained in detail each item of receipts and expenditure under the various funds of the GMS. Overall, the total income/anticipated income was more than the expenditure/anticipated expenditure, which indicated that the financial position of the GMS was quite sound, though, in respect of certain individual funds, the expenditure was more than the income/projected income. In such cases, money had been transferred from the funds having surplus to those having deficits. He sought the approval of the General Body to the accounts statements as well as the Budget proposals for the year 2009-10. The same were also unanimously approved by the General Body Mandatory/Statutory Resolutions: To give legal effect to the above approvals and to seek the approval of the General Body to the appointment of the auditors of the GMS for the financial year 2009-10, Bk. B.L. Chhibber, IRS (Retd.), Vice President GMS, introduced the following four Resolutions. Explaining the salient feature of the fiscal performance of the GMS for the years 2006-07 & 2007-08, he stated that the financial position of the GMS was sound and robust. The Managing Committee of the Sabha had been judiciously acting on the maxim ‘more income, less expenditure’ and illustrated the same with a Sanskrit sloka from the Ramayana, wherein Lord Rama had advised his brother, Bharat to ensure that the income of the kingdom was always more than the expenditure and that none of the expenditure went to the undeserving: “Aayaha te vipula kaschit; kaschit alpatera vyayaha; He explained these from the facts and figures given in the financial statements and pointed out that the end result was that the GMS had a surplus of Rs. 48,57,056/- as at the end the financial year 2006-07 and Rs, 77,04,191/- at the end of the financial year 2007-08. He assured the house that the Managing Committee would follow the same sound policy in future also. He then introduced the four Resolutions, one by one: Resolution No. I “Resolved that the General Body of the General Mohyal Sabha, in its meeting held on the 10th May 2009, at the Mohyal Foundation, New Delhi, do hereby ratify the proceedings of the General Body Meeting held on the 18th March 2007 that were published in the April 2007 issue of the Mohyal Mitter.” The Resolution was proposed for adoption by Lt. Col. S.K. Dutt and seconded by Shri Ramesh Datta and Dr. Subhash Datta. The same was put to vote and was carried unanimously. Resolution No. II “Resolved that the General Body of the General Mohyal Sabha, in its meeting held on the 10th May 2009, at the Mohyal Foundation, New Delhi, do hereby adopt and approve the audited Balance Sheets and income and expenditure statements for the financial years 2006-07 & 2007-08”. The Resolution was proposed for adoption by Shri N.D. Datta and Shri S.N. Datta and seconded by Smt. Amba Bali and Shri J.L. Bali. When it was put to vote, Shri Pawan Bakshi raised a point regarding the expenditure figure mentioned in crores, in the income & expenditure statements. Shri B.L. Chhibber clarified that the figure alluded to by Shri Pawan Bakshi, shown as expenditure, also contained an element of depreciation as also the balance carried forward from the previous year, which is as per the normal accounting practice. As such, the actual outgo as expenditure was only a few lakhs and not in crores, as presumed by Shri Pawan Bakshi. After this clarification, the Resolution was again put to vote and was adopted unanimously. Resolution No. III “Resolved that the general body of the General Mohyal Sabha, in its meeting held on the 10th May 2009 at the Mohyal Foundation, New Delhi, hereby appreciates and approves the report for the period April 2007 to March 2009, presented by the Secretary General”. Adoption of the Resolution was proposed by Bhai K.N. Chhibber and seconded by Shri Vijyendra Datta.and Shri C.K. Bhai . The Resolution was put to vote and was adopted unanimously. Resolution No. IV “Resolved that the general body of the General Mohyal Sabha, in its meeting held on the 10th May 2009, at the Mohyal Foundation, New Delhi, hereby approves the appointment of M/s. H.S. Ahuja & Co., Gobind Mansion, Connaught Circus, New Delhi-110001, as auditors of the General Mohyal Sabha (GMS) to hold office from the conclusion of this general body meeting until the conclusion of the next General Body meeting of the GMS, on such terms and conditions as may be fixed and approved by the Managing Committee of the GMS”. Adoption of the Resolution was proposed by Shri P.L. Mehta and seconded by Shri N.K. Vaid and Shri Rit Mohan. Opposing the Resolution, Shri Pawan Bakshi suggested that a Mohyal only be appointed as the auditors of the GMS. The suggestion, along with the Resolution, was put to vote, and the Resolution was carried by a majority vote, with the lone dissenting vote being that of Shri Pawan Bakshi. Rzd. B.D. Bali, however, intervened to say that if any Mohyal Chartered Accountant firm with comparable competency approaches us any time, we will certainly consider the same. PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS
Welcoming the members to the meeting of the General Body, Rzd. B.D. Bali observed that, after the report and speeches by the Secretary General, Shri D.V. Mohan, Secretary Finance, Shri S.K.Chhibber, and the Vice President, Bk. B.L. Chhibber, who had elaborated on the activities and achievements, financial position and future programmes of the GMS, he had practically nothing more to add. But he expressed a sense of satisfaction and fulfilment that over the years, GMS has acquired tremendous goodwill, credibility and financial stability – of which we can all feel rightly proud. G.M.S. has executed several meaningful projects such as Mohyal Foundation, MERIT, Mohyal Bhawan, Inderpuri, Delhi, the Mohyal Ashram and Sewa Sadan at Haridwar – and now the Mohyal Ashram at Vrindavan – all of which will remain as monuments of our achievements and a source of inspiration for the new generation for centuries to come. He exhorted and appealed to all members of the community to come forward and earn the satisfaction of being part of the metamorphosis that was sought to be brought for upliftment and progress of the community. (A detailed report of his speech appears in the “editorial” of this issue pages 3-4). His appeal had an electrifying effect on the audience who gave him a standing ovation as a token of their appreciation and approval amid resonding slogans of “Jai Mohyal”. Mr. P.K. Datta, member GMS Managing Committee was so touched by the speech that he came forward and announced that he will adopt 10 widows and would bear all expenses, estimated to be between 2 to 2.5 lacs for the proposed Youth Camp to be held near Dehradun between 2nd to 4th October 2009. Rzd.. B.D. Bali appreciated his fine gesture and exhorted the gathering to emulate this noble example. In the open forum which followed, several speakers expressed their views on varied subjects. Shri P.K. Datta stated that Rzd. B.D. Bali had really inspired him with his dedication and service to the community. Right from 1984 onwards, he had been setting apart a portion of his income for charity and he declared that he would also be adopting 10 Mohyal widows for rendering financial help to them, through the GMS Referring to one dissenting voice heard in the meeting, he was of the view that, while dissent is welcome, discipline and regard for the elders also are of paramount importance. Expressing happiness over the affiliation of 42 local sabhas to the GMS, Shri P.K. Datta wondered whether they were really affiliated. He felt that the affiliated sabhas, to be really affiliated, should get their constitution and accounts approved by the apex body. They should also have closer relationship with the GMS. He stated that ‘education’ was the most precious gift one could give to the youth. He suggested the creation of a separate wing in the GMS and the local sabhas devoted to the education of the Mohyal youth, as well as for their career guidance. GMS had recently constituted a Career Counselling Committee, which he welcomed. He offered to give guidance to the youth in the pharmaceutical line, which was his speciality. He also offered to donate books for career guidance of youth. Shri P.K. Datta suggested that Mohyal entrepreneurs should also give details of the positions available in their organization, with the qualifications required, in the GMS website for the Mohyal youth to take advantage of it. At present, only the job-seekers were giving their CVs in the website. He also suggested the setting up of dispensaries by the local sabhas on the lines of the one set up by the Mohyal Sabha Ambala City to render medical assistance to the members of the community. Speaking next, Dr. Rattan Dutta, CEO, MERIT, further elaborated on the recently formed Career Counselling Committee. The Committee had started functioning with great enthusiasm and had its first meeting on the 23rd April 2009. It was decided therein that their first target should be students of classes 9 to 12. The Committee had devised a proforma (which had been put in the GMS website and was also being published in the Mohyal Mitter) to prepare a database of such students. They were also targeting the Pratibhashalee Vidyarthi Awardees in this regard, who were also being addressed to furnish their particulars in the prescribed proforma. The Committee had also desired that a few pages in the Mohyal Mitter be kept reserved for disseminating information on career guidance and interaction with the Mohyal youth. Dr. Rattan Dutta added that, in his professional capacity as an IT expert, he had had the experience of supervising and guiding several M. Phil and PhD students, and stated that anyone needing guidance in the IT field was welcome to approach him. He was happy to inform that papers prepared by two students of MERIT, on (i) Vision of MERIT and (ii) Life-long Learning, had been accepted for presentation in the World Congress on IT. He stated that the Career Counselling Committee had also decided to publish the names of eminent Mohyal scientists – past and present – in the GMS Website/Mohyal Mitter, for which data was being collected. Shri Suresh Mehta, Representative Member of MS, West Zone, suggested that the GMS should adopt some students from amongst the Pratibhashalee awardees every year, with a view to sponsoring them for higher studies. The Secretary General informed that such an exercise was already on and was being undertaken by the Career Counselling Committee. Dr. Subhas Chander Dutta of Ashok Vihar stated that he was very much moved by the address of Rzd. B.D. Bali and the progress achieved by the GMS and its future projects. His stress was on education of the Mohyal youth, for which he suggested that the local sabhas should provide data on students to the GMS. He added that the theme of the last Mohyal Milan of the Ashok Vihar Club was ‘Education – Key to success of the community’. Emphasis on job-oriented education was the need of the hour and it was heartening that the GMS was working on these lines. He also appealed to the members of the community to make liberal donations for the construction of the Vrindavan Ashram. Shri Rit Mohan of Panipat exhorted the Mohyal youth to work hard to make the dreams of Rzd. B.D. Bali a reality. He added that those who work should be prepared to face criticism and that those, who do not do any work for the community, know only to criticize. In this context, he recalled the services of the late Shri P.L. Bali and the late Shri Mohinder Mehta, who had worked selflessly for the uplift of the community. The community was fortunate to have a leader like Rzd. B.D. Bali and it was everyone’s duty to follow him. Shri Madhusudan Dutta of Rohini/Pitampura informed that MS Rohini/Pitampura had successfully organized a Youth Camp at the Mohyal Ashram, Haridwar, recently. But they could get only 10 rooms in the Ashram and hence could take only 22 persons to the Camp. Had more rooms been made available the number of participants could have been larger. He also suggested the creation of a Mohyal Sewa Corps from amongst the Mohyal youth, on the lines it existed in olden times in Lahore, to do service to the community. Rzd. Amit Bali of Rani Bagh suggested creation of a Unit under the GMS, on the lines of Employment Exchanges, for obtaining data on job availability from Mohyal entrepreneurs and recommending suitable Mohyal candidates for such jobs. Another suggestion made by him was that, since most of the Mohyals join the armed forces, workshops and seminars should be organized by GMS to advise the Mohyal youth in the matter of joining the different wings of the armed forces. In this regard, retired senior Mohyal officers from the armed forces should come forward to guide and advise the youth. Shri N.K. Vaid of Vasant Kunj suggested the preparation of a directory of all Mohyals in Delhi, in the first instance, and, later, an all India directory. VOTE OF THANKS Shri G.L. Datta ‘Josh’, who was given the pleasant task of proposing the vote of thanks, started off in his inimitable style by saying that the periodical reports of the GMS Managing Committee at the General Body Meetings were like the Annual Confidential Reports in Government Offices, and these may be christened, in the context of the GMS as ‘Annual Community Reports’. He expressed thanks, on behalf of the GMS, to the participants, for attending the General Body Meeting, listening to the reports and the speeches patiently and approving the Secretary General’s report and the financial proposals of the GMS. He also thanked the speakers for their valuable suggestions. Being the Poet Laureate of the GMS, he could not resist reciting the following Urdu couplets, while summing up his address: ‘BHIKHRE TO ZAMANE KI THOKAR MEIN AA GAYI, and in praise of Rzd. B.D. Bali, ‘QUAM KA SHIRAZA BAD-BAKHTI SE THA TAR TAR ‘AAP KO DAULAT DI KHUDA NE SAATH MEIN DIL BHI DIYA AUR KHIDMATE MAKHLOOK NE AAPKA NAAM ROSHAN KIYA’ The meeting came to an end, after the recitation of Gayatri Mantra and Shanti Path, led by Smt. Krishan Lata Chhibber. All present were then invited to partake in the sumptuous lunch arranged by the GMS. AGM 2009 A COMPREHENSIVE, EXHAUSTIVE REPORT
Dear Brothers and Sisters, It is my privilege, once again to extend to all of you a hearty and warm welcome, on my own behalf and on behalf of the GMS, to this General Body Meeting of the General Mohyal Sabha. Since the last General Body Meeting, regrettably, we have lost many of our brothers, amongst them, Shri P.L. Bali, Secretary (Finance), Mohyal Gaurav Shri B.D. Dutta, one-time Senior Vice President, Shri Ranbir Pratap Bali, Shri Vipin Bali and Maj. A N. Chhibber (Retd.), all of whom were members of GMS Managing Committee. Major A.N. Chhibber who left for his heavenly abode on 14.3.2008 had bequeathed all his moveable and immoveable property to the GMS. He was given a ceremonial cremation and all the religious rites, including the immersion of his sacred ashes in the Ganga at Haridwar, were performed by the representatives of GMS. We all pay our heartfelt tributes to all of them and pray for the eternal peace of the departed souls. Since the last General Body Meeting in March 2007, GMS has made phenomenal progress and there has been spurt in the activities in all its spheres. GMS, amongst its multifarious activities, has laid much greater stress on co-ordination with all sections of the Biradari and all the local Sabhas which has been greatly appreciated and acknowledged. The multifarious activities of GMS over the last two years are as under: 1. Presidents & Secretaries Meet: A meeting of the Presidents and Secretaries of the local sabhas was held at the Mohyal Foundation on August 12, 2007. Many issues of importance to the community, such as revival of inactive Local Sabhas, Mohyal Divas Celebrations at different venues on the invitation of local sabhas, need for proper verification of the particulars of the applicants by the local sabhas for the grant of financial assistance to needy widows, the sick and physically disabled, poor and meritorious students, overlapping of jurisdiction of local sabhas, drive for increasing the number of permanent members of the GMS were discussed at length. Presidents & Secretaries were also requested to assist GMS for getting more donations from the Biradari of their jurisdiction to cement emotional bonds. The Interaction Committee headed by our Vice President Ch. G.L. Dutta Josh, and consisting of Shri J.P. Mehta, Secretary, Shri Ashwani Bali, Secretary Public Relations and Shri Yogesh Mehta, Secretary Youth Wing, have been actively coordinating and maintaining close touch with all the Sabhas for the mutual support in pursuit of the community’s welfare. It is very heartening to note that during period of this report 4 new local sabhas have been established at Toronto, (Canada), Navi Mumbai, Paschim Vihar, New Delhi and Vasundhra Enclave, Delhi. The number of socal sabhas affiliated with GMS as on date is 42 which is a record by itself. 2. Mohyal Milan by Local Sabhas: GMS Office Bearers and more particularly our President Rzd. B.D. Bali have been attending Mohyal Melas of the various sabhas wherever invited. Attending these Melas has been an excellent avenue for interaction with the local Biradari, particularly the youth who have been very enthusiastically participating in these Melas which create awareness and love for the community. GMS gives a shagun of Rs. 5100/- to the local sabhas whenever they hold Mohyal Milans . In 2007-08 such shaguns were given to ten local sabhas and in 2008-09, these shaguns were given to eight Local Sabhas. GMS also extends matching grants to local Sabhas subject to maximum of Rs.5 Lacs for construction of their Bhawans. We have granted Rs.2 Lacs to Mohyal Sabha Hoshiairpur for purchase of land for their Bhawan with a promise of Rs.3 lacs as a matching grant for the construction of their Bhawan. The Foundation Stone of Mohyal Bhawan Hoshiarpur was laid by Rzd. B.D. Bali, President GMS on 19.4.2009. We have also given a grant of Rs.5 Lacs to Mohyal Sabha Ambala City for construction of their Bhawan which has since been inaugurated by Rzd. B.D. Bali on 12.4.2009, 3. Mohyal Diwas Celebrations: GMS celebrated 3rd Mohyal Diwas on 23rd September 2007, together with the function for presenting the Pratibhashali awards to the eligible students which was largely attended. Besides the mementoes given to the eligible students, Lt. Gen. M.L. Chhibber, President of the 50th All-India Mohyal Conference, Bhopal, the Convener and the Director of the Shri Satya Sai International Centre for Human Values also presented a copy each of the book on “Leadership” by Shri Satya Sai Baba, to the awardees of class XII, who had scored 80% or more marks in their Board examination. At the Mohyal Diwas celebrations, which followed, Rzd. B.D. Bali gave away the various Mohyal awards, viz., Mohyal Gaurav, Excellence in the Professional Achievement and Excellence in Sports Achievement to distinguished Mohyals, including entrepreneurs, journalists, sportspersons etc. The celebrations were rounded off with a variety entertainment programme consisting of songs, dances etc. followed by Preeti Bhoj. The Fourth Mohyal Diwas was celebrated on November 9, 2008, where Padma Bhushan Shri Jagmohan, former Union Cabinet Minister and Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, and, Mohyal Gaurav Prof. V.N. Dutta, Professor Emeritus Kurukshetra University, were the Chief Guest, and Guest of Honour, respectively. The function was attended by a large gathering, amongst them being illustrious Mohyals like Bk. S.K. Chhibber, Lt. Gen. M.L. Chhibber, Dr. Bhai Mahavir , Lt. Gen. H.C. Dutta and Lt. Gen. G.L. Bakshi. The illuminating addresses by the distinguished guests were listened to keenly by the large gathering present at the function. The speeches were followed by a cultural programme and a sumptuous lunch hosted by GMS. 4. Matrimonial Melas: The Second and Third Matrimonial Melas were held at the Mohyal Foundation on December 16, 2007, and December 14, 2008, respectively. The Mohyal parents/guardians had whole-heartedly welcomed this initiative of the GMS. The second and third matrimonial melas were also well-attended and equally successful as the first one in 2006. Around 700 parents and other relatives of eligible boys and girls (and in some cases boys and girls themselves) participated most enthusiastically in the melas. Computerised lists of eligible boys and girls, arranged caste-wise, separately for Manglik and non-Manglik, were distributed for the perusal of all concerned. Facilities for on-the-spot matching of horoscopes, both by computer as also by traditional astrologers, were provided by the GMS. A Preeti Bhoj was also hosted by the GMS for the participants. As per the information gathered, about 75-80 successful alliances had resulted from the melas held in 2006 and 2007. The popularity of such matrimonial get-togethers is further confirmed from the fact that, as a result of the recent Matrimonial Mela held on December, 14, 2008, we have received information about 10 marriages already solemnized. Mrs. Krishan Lata Chhibber, her husband Shri Sushil K. Chhibber and their team of volunteers who took lot of pains in the successful organization of these functions deserve our thanks and appreciation. Thanks are also due to Smt. Amba Bali, Convenor, Matrimonial Committee, and Shri D.R. Chhibber, Secretary, Match-Making Committee, who have been helping–the latter, despite his failing health – in conducting the quarterly matrimonial get-togethers at the Mohyal Bhawan, Inderpuri, New Delhi. 5. Pratibhashali Vidyarthee Awards: These functions are becoming increasingly popular day by day. The eligible students, both boys and girls, and their parents and relatives participate in such functions most enthusiastically. During the period of this report, two such functions were held on September 23, 2007 and October 12, 2008, where awards and prizes were given to 97, and 77, students respectively. Dr. Ashok Lav deserves thanks and appreciation for the successful organization of these functions. 6. All India Mohyal Youth Camp at Jalandhar: The ‘All India Mohyal Youth Camp-2007’ was organized at Jalandhar on the 24th and 25th November 2007, by the District Mohyal Sabha, Jalandhar, under the auspices of the GMS. It was a colourful event, in which not only the Mohyal Youth, but even elders, from Punjab, J&K, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Delhi etc. took active part. The participants started arriving on the 24th November 2007 and assembled at the Devi Talab Mandir, Jalandhar. A team of Office Bearers of the GMS consisting of Shri Ashwani Bali and Shri Yogesh Mehta had gone a day earlier, on the 23rd November, to assist Shri Pushap Bali, President, Youth Wing, MS Jalandhar and his team to make arrangements for the camp, the reception and accommodation of the guests. The highlight of the proceedings conducted by Dr. Ashok Lav was the suggestion made by him for the formation of four Groups of the Mohyal Youth present at the camp to go into different issues related to the youth and make recommendations on (1) Youth expectations from the GMS, (2) Role of local Mohyal Sabhas for the empowerment of youth, (3) Inculcatation of Mohyali Spirit and Culture in the youth and (4) Exploring ways and means to obtain guidance/help for the youth from Mohyal Industrialists. The main programme was held at the Lions Club, Jalandhar on November 25, where the four groups, formed a day earlier, submitted their reports for further discussion and implementation. In the cultural programme that followed, Mohyali children, young girls and boys participated enthusiastically and danced to the beat of drums, sang Punjabi filmi and folk songs. 7. Financial Aid to the needy: The GMS is continuing its programme of granting financial aid to the needy. As compared to 204 widows on our rolls in 2007-2008, the number had increased to 216 in 2008-2009. This is expected to go up to 225 in the current financial year. The Financial Advisory Committee examines all cases for financial assistance carefully. The general guideline followed by the Committee is to continue the assistance to the existing beneficiaries, from year to year on the basis of a Life Certificate produced by the beneficiary and endorsed by local sabha concerned. The Committee is liberal in the cases of new applicants also and cases of all applicants whose applications are complete and who have furnished all the required documents and whose cases are recommended by the local sabha concerned, are invariably approved. The position regarding grant of financial aid to the needy, sick and disabled members of the community is also similar. During 2007-2008 their number was 25, which increased to 30 in 2008-2009 and is expected to go up to 35, during the current financial year. In some serious cases, where the financial assistance required is large, appeals are also issued through the columns of Mohyal Mitter and all the donations received in response to the appeal are passed on to the beneficiaries together with the aid from the GMS. One current case of this type is that of a patient suffering from Cancer, assistance to whom was recommended by Mohyal Sabha, Noida. There was also the case of three Bali sisters of Kalkaji, who were in impecunious circumstances and to whom assistance of Rs. 36,000/- a year was given. Another lady, whose husband was suffering from a kidney ailment, was granted financial relief of Rs. 19,500 during 2008-2009. While funds available for grant of assistance to widows and needy persons are limited, sufficient funds are available in the Education Fund. Assistance is invariably granted to all the applicant students who fulfill the criteria of merit and financial condition of their parents/guardians. The number of students seeking and getting assistance for classes up to XII on the Merit-cum-Means basis has remained 21 for the last two years. The Financial Advisory Committee has recently raised the upper limit for granting financial assistance for higher education to Rs. 2,000/- per month. There were four such beneficiaries during 2007-2008 and ten during 2008-2009. Cases of applicants seeking larger financial assistance are considered by the FAC on a case to case basis. 8. Trusts held by the GMS: The total trust money available with GMS, as of March 2007, when the last General Body Meeting was held, was Rs. 1,73,90,550. The present balance in all the trusts is Rs. 3,23,35,000, a percentage increase of 86% in two years. This is one of the sure indications of the credibility of the GMS and the trust that the members of the community have in their Apex Body. Donors continue to add to the trusts already opened by them. New trusts are also being opened regularly. The total number of trusts, excluding Langar Fund Trusts, that was 374 in March 2007 has reached the figure of 400 in April 2009. 9. GMS Board of Trustees (Sarprast): In terms of Art. 12 of the latest amended Constitution of the GMS; the GMS Sarprast Trust was formally constituted in May 2007, with 11 eminent Mohyals as Trustees. 10. Mohyal Foundation Trust: Similarly, under Article 5(4) of the amended Constitution, the Mohyal Foundation Trust also was constituted with 11 eminent Mohyals as Trustees. 11. Co-opting of members of the Managing Committee of the GMS: The vacancies in the Managing Committee of the GMS were filled up by co-opting Shri P.K. Dutta, Maj. Gen. K.K. Bakshi, Mrs. Surinder Dutta and Shri Sushil K. Chhibber. Shri Chhibber was, later on, elected as Secretary (Finance) of the GMS. 12. Mohyal Mitter: Our monthly magazine Mohyal Mitter is becoming popular, day by day. In March 2009, we had around 3500 subscribers of all categories. The fact that Mohyal Mitter is the oldest continuously published magazine (over 117 years old) has been recognized by the Limca Book of Records, who have issued a formal certificate to that effect to us. This has also been mentioned at page 74 of the 2009 edition of the Limca Book of Records that has been published both in Hindi and English. Besides sending complimentary copies of the magazine to the Patrons, Pratisht, and Life Members of the GMS, the other annual subscribers are charged a yearly subscription of Rs. 50/- only, as against the cost of around Rs. 300 (approx.) per annum, per copy, being incurred by the GMS on its publication and distribution. This is done so that the Mohyal Mitter, being an important link between the GMS and individual Mohyals, it is our wish that the same should be available at an affordable cost, at every mohyal household and even to the economically weaker sections of the community. As the apex body of the Mohyals, it is the duty and responsibility of the GMS to keep the community members informed about its activities as also the news and developments within the community. Mehta O.P. Mohan, Editor, Mr. N.D. Dutta and Dr. Ashok Lav Executive Editors of English and Hindi sections deserve appreciation and thanks for their continuous efforts and support to our prestigious publication. 13. GMS Website: Till about two years back, the GMS website (www.Mohyal.com) was being maintained, every month, through an outside agency in Noida. The only data being uploaded was the Mohyal Mitter. The maintenance of the website (which has been renamed “www.Mohyalonline.com) has now fully been taken over by the GMS. Since the last couple of years, the GMS are doing the uploading of the data, in house. Not only is the Mohyal Mitter being uploaded every month, but the website is also being constantly updated. We have since entered data on the permanent members of the GMS, all the members of the Managing Committee and its Office Bearers, with their photographs, wherever available, awardees of different honours conferred by the GMS on eminent members of the community, particulars of Langar Fund donations both for Haridwar and Vrindavan room donors also both for Haridwar and Vrindavan, important events held under the auspices of the GMS, Telephone Directory of GMS and local sabhas etc., Matrimonial lists and details of trusts have all been uploaded and are available on the website. We are also planning to put the Mohyal History by Shri P.N. Bali on the website. Information on all the immovable property held by the GMS and the Local Sabhas, with photographs, is being collected for putting on the website. It is our endeavour to provide an in-depth information about the development and progress of our community on day to day basis for the benefit of our fraternity as well as for the general public. 14. M.E.R.I.T.: The “Mohyal Education and Research Institute” that started functioning from the small outhouse in the Mohyal Foundation Building premises in 1996 has made big strides and become one of the popular institutes in New Delhi. Besides conducting regular ‘A’ level and ‘B’ level DOEACC courses, COPA, and special courses for army officers and other ranks, MERIT also conducts other courses like MS Office, web designing, hardware, networking, internet browsing, C++ etc. M.E.R.I.T. is providing on line testing facilities for TOEFL-iBT, and examinations conducted by Microsoft, CCNA etc. In addition, Project Training is being provided to B.Tech/MCA/Polytechnic students. M.E.R.I.T. is also helping the GMS Secretariat in maintaining and updating the GMS website. There are future plans to have tie ups with C-DAC, IGNOU and IP University with the aim of attaining the status of a college running different university courses in the field of Information Technology. M.E.R.I.T. is also helping the GMS in career counseling, a mention of which has been separately made in this report. We owe our thanks to our Sr. Vice President Shri O.P. Mohan and the Hony. Director of the Institute Dr. Rattan Dutta for their untiring efforts in making this prestigious project a great success. 15. Career Counselling Committee: A Career Counseling Committee has been constituted to guide and advise Mohyal students in choosing their careers. The first meeting of the Committee was held on April 23, 2009, and the modalities for its operations are being worked out. The Committee is also of the tentative view that periodical “Vocational Guidance & Counselling Melas”, on the lines of ‘Matrimonial Melas, be organized. It has also recommended that space should be set apart in the Mohyal Mitter for providing information to the readers on career options. Based on the recommendations of the Committee, a circular letter has been sent to the past Pratibhashali Awardees for furnishing their particulars so that plans could be formulated to help them in choosing their careers. 16. Maintenance of GMS Properties: This is a continuous process. Painting of both the interiors and exteriors of the Mohyal Bhavan at Inderpuri has recently been completed. Rooms at Mohyal Ashram, Haridwar were painted and polished sometime back. A contractor has recently been appointed to carry out large scale renovation of the four buildings at Haridwar. After completion of this work, the exteriors of the buildings will be done along with the touching of the interiors, wherever needed. In addition to the neat and clean environment and a good ambience, it is always our endeavor to provide still better facilities at the Ashram. With this end in view we have recently installed a new Generator with a higher capacity so that guests are not put to any inconvenience during the load shedding at the Complex. 17. Installation of Pratimas: The work regarding the installation of Pratimas of Sapt Rishis at the Ashram is also in hand. It is also proposed to install the idols of Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati in the Meditation Hall to provide a devotional environment for the benefit of the pilgrims. 18. Major K.R. Bali Mohyal School, Dehradun: Pending the final probate of the ‘Will’ bequeathing the property at Dehradun to the GMS by the late Smt. Kaushalya Rani Bali, we had started a Nursery School at the premises in April 2007, with an initial strength of 15 students. The school has become very popular and, at present, we have 70 students. The number is expected to rise to around 100 in July 2009. The school has now reached the break even point and an application has been submitted to the authorities concerned at Dehradun for the registration of the school. It is our dream to eventually put up a prestigious School and an old age home at the site once the issue of probate is finalized in the near future. 19. In the National Cause: Besides providing regular relief to widows, the sick and the handicapped and poor students, we are discharging our responsibility towards the nation as well. A donation of Rs. 1 lakh was made to the Prime Ministers’ Relief Fund towards the victims of Bihar Floods in October 2008. Earlier, when tsunami struck, a contribution of Rs. 1.5 lakh was made to the same Fund. 20. Vrindavan Mohyal Ashram: Encouraged by the success and popularity of the Mohyal Ashram and the Sewa Sadan at Haridwar, the GMS purchased a plot of land measuring 2,500 sq. yds. in the strategically located Ashram Vihar Complex, on the main road, leading from the National Highway to the Vrindavan City, for constructing a similar Mohyal Ashram there. The Bhoomi Poojan and Foundation Stone laying ceremony of the proposed Ashram at the site was performed on February 14, 2009, by the GMS President, Rzd. B.D. Bali and attended by a large number of members of the community. The Bhoomi Poojan, itself, proved very lucky to the GMS. On the eve of the ceremony the Mathura-Vrindavan Development Authority announced an increase in the FAR (Floor Area Ratio) that enabled us to construct more rooms and facilities. Although it required some changes in the original drawings prepared by our Architect, Shri Satish Bali the end results were much more beneficial to the GMS. The revised drawings and application for permission to construct have been submitted to the concerned authorities on May 4, 2009 and formal permission is expected to be received shortly when construction can be started. It is hoped that the construction should be completed in about a year’s time. According to the revised plans, besides parking space within our area and rain harvesting, the building will have a basement and three floors above the ground level, i.e. ground, first and second floors. In addition to the lobbies and other common facilities, the building will have 8 suites, 31 rooms with attached bath and 9 other rooms for the use of staff and other miscellaneous purposes. There will be a Multi Purpose Hall, a Dining Hall, Kitchen and Library. GMS President Rzd. B.D. Bali has announced a personal donation of Rs. 15 lakhs for the construction of the Dining Hall. Senior Vice President Mehta O.P. Mohan has taken the responsibility for meeting the cost of construction and furnishing of the Library, for which he has announced a donation of Rs.5 lakhs. The total estimated cost of construction of the Ashram is Rs. 3.5 crores. It is expected that the entire cost will be met by donations from the members of the Community and others. Members of the community have been requested to make liberal donations for the purpose, and they have responded generously. Besides the donations for the Dining Hall and the Library, mentioned earlier, we have, so far, received donations/promises of donations, for 6 suites, @ Rs. 3,50,000 each from Mrs. Nita Bali, wife of President (GMS), Mehta O.P. Mohan, Senior Vice President, Shri B.L. Chhibber, IRS(Retd.), Shri S.K. Chhibber IAS (Retd.), Shri S.N. Dutta Ex. Vice-President (GMS) and Shri Vinod Dutt of Khanna. Donations and promises of donations @ Rs. 2.50,000 have been received from 18 donors that include Shri G.L. Dutta,(Josh), Vice President (GMS) Shri P.K. Datta, MC Member (2 donations) and Shri Ramesh Dutt, President, Faridabad Mohyal Sabha. In addition, individual donations, ranging between Rs. 500/- and Rs. 1,25,000, have been received from many brothers and sisters. A Langar Fund Trust @ Rs. 11,000/- per donation on the lines of one at Mohyal Ashram, Haridwar has also been started for the Vrindavan Ashram. We have already received 31 such donations. I am sure that members of the community will come forward in large numbers to make liberal donations for this noble cause, just as they had done for our earlier ventures, viz. construction of the Mohyal Bhavan, Inderpuri, Mohyal Foundation at New Delhi, and Mohyal Ashram & Sewa Sadan at Haridwar. 21. Future Projections: Now that the GMS has gained momentum, it is on the launching pad for more, and still greater, successes. Our immediate priority is to successfully complete the prestigious Vrindavan Ashram Project. I am sure huge funds of around Rs. 3.5 crores required will be generated as donations from the members of our community and the project completed within the stipulated period of one year. I am also sure that the Ashram at Vrindavan will be as popular as the Mohyal Ashram, Haridwar and bring more glory to the Community. Next in line is the Mohyal Bhavan at Agra where a plot of land has already been purchased in the name of the GMS and formalities like its registration etc. are expected to be completed shortly. Side by side, we also have the following plans in the current year: a) All India Mohyal Youth Camp at Dehradun-Mussorie hills between the 2nd and the 4th October 2009, in cooperation with the Mohyal Sabha, Dehradun. b) Pratibhashali Vidyarthi in September 2009. A notification inviting applications for the next Pratibhashali Vidyarthi Awards is being published in the June 2009 issue of the Mohyal Mitter. c) Mohyal Divas Celebrations 2009: It is proposed that the next Mohyal Divas in the current year should be dedicated to Munshi Bakshi Ram Das Chhibber, a giant Mohyal of his times, who played a major role in the establishment of the General Mohyal Sabha and publication of Mohyal Mitter in the year 1891. d) Meeting of the Presidents and Secretaries of the local sabhas: In September/October 2009. e) Matrimonial Mela 2009: In December 2009. Efforts will be made to re-activate such of the local sabhas which are, currently, not very active. We are also thinking of holding the next Mohyal Conference at a suitable venue, in the near future. Plans will be chalked out for the proper utilization of our properties at Dehradun and Meerut in the best interest of the Mohyal Community. Efforts to further strengthen MERIT are also continuing. 22. G.M.S. Secretariat: With the all round awareness, progress, development and enhancement in the credibility of the GMS, the volume of work of the GMS Secretariat has tremendously increased. I am happy to say that with the assistance of MERIT, we have computerized all our accounts and book keeping and the staff is fully geared to take the load both of the administration and accounts as well as the public relations exercise being done at the GMS level. I wish to thank the entire staff for their continued dedication and devotion in the discharge of their obligations and duties. Here, I would also like to express our thanks to Shri B.L. Chhibber IRS (Retd.), Vice President (GMS) for his advice to the Secretariat on all legal, constitutional, taxation and financial matters. I am happy to observe that GMS’s prestige, credibility and financial stability have never been as high as it is today. We are very fortunate to have Rzd. B.D. Bali as our Team Leader, who has an outstanding vision, a very positive approach and wherever he goes, he germinates the seed of “love”, which is bound to blossom into a tremendous goodwill. I am sure such devotion, dedication and sincerity will enable the General Mohyal Sabha to continue to work towards the achievement of its cherished goal to see that, in times to come, there will not be a single illiterate and poor Mohyal and all will be affluent and educated making them cynosure of the Society. 23. Conclusion: I have gone through the history of the GMS right from its inception in 1891 and have seen that the Sabha has gone through many ups and downs. On closer study, I have noticed that as and when our leaders had any positive thoughts that they sincerely tried to put into practice, they were always successful. A thought is like a seed in the brain. If the seed is healthy and good the resulting crop after putting in hard labour and work will always be good and in abundance. The inverse is also true. I was a witness to the germination of seeds for the construction of Mohyal Foundation, Mohyal Ahram, Haridwar, Mohyal Ashram, Vrindavan and many other projects in the mind of our leader Rzd. B.D. Bali and the result is there for everybody to see. It is not only that all the projects have been completed successfully but the process has resulted in the General Mohyal Sabha gaining tremendously during the last two decades in building the credibility and confidence amongst the Mohyal Community as a whole. I am grateful to our President, Rzd. B.D. Bali and to all of you for having patiently listened to this long report. I am also thankful to my colleagues in the GMS Managing Committee, specially the Office Bearers and the Mohyal Community, as a whole, which has provided me with an opportunity to serve them. I am also grateful to our staff in the GMS Secretariat. Without their assistance, cooperation and feed-back, it would not have been possible to successfully finish this Herculean job. Thereupon, Rzd. B.D. Bali suggested that Shri P.K. Datta be the Chief Guest at the Youth Camp but Shri P.K. Datta politely declined saying that this privilege was that of Rzd. B.D. Bali. In that case, Bali Sahib said, Shri P.K. Datta would preside over the function. This announcement evoked loud spontaneous applause from the august house. Humility exalts man to the heaven of glory and power, while pride abases him to the depths of wretchedness and degradation..... Those who are the beloved of God, in whatever place they gather and whomsoever they may meet, must evince, in their attitude towards God, and in the manner of their celebration of His praise and glory, such humility and submissiveness that every atom of dust beneath their feet may attest the depth of their devotion. –Saying of Baha’u’ llah The Gita presents some of the most important truths of human existence in a language that is clear, memorable, and charged with emotion. It is a poem, of course, and not a systematic manual. Its method is not linear but circular and descriptive. It returns to its central point–letting go of the fruits of action–again and again, addressing not only superior students but also the great majority, who are spiritually unfocused and slow to grasp the point. —Stephen Mitchell A Doyen of International Sports SHRI S.M. ANTIM YATRA DEATH AT THE DOORSTEP The great poet Alfred Tennyson: “I am now 90 years old and am aware that the hour of my tryst with destiny is drawing near. I do not accept irrational, unproven theories of life and rebirth in different forms. I do not accept the belief that the body perishes, the soul survives. I do not know what the soul looks like. Neither I, nor any one, has seen it. I accept the finality of death. We do not know what happens to us after we die.” G.M.S. expresses its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prays to God to grant eternal peace to the departed souls and strength to their families to bear with fortitude their irreparable loss. — D.V. Prabh Dayal Mehta and Secretary of Paschim Vihar Mohyal Sabha (PVSM) left for his heavenly abode on the 9th May 2009. The sudden demise of Sh. Mehta is an immense shock to his family and loss to the community.
He hailed from Sargodha. After partition Sh. Mehta joined the Indian Armed Forces and was a war veteran who made the community proud in all the three main wars of the country in 1962, 1965 and 1971. After a glorious service in the Army, Sh. Mehta served the Ashok Hotel, New Delhi. Post-retirement, the Sh. Bali was observed by his wife Smt. Tripta Bali and family members on 22.03.2009. On this occasion, she donated Rs.10,000/- for the Vrindavan Ashram Building fund, in her husband’s memory.—Smt. Tripta Bali c/o Shri Jitender Bakshi, 28/5, West Patel Nagar, New Delhi-08 (M) 9811304285 SMT. PRATISHTHA MOHAN DUTT: The sudden demise of my life partner, Smt. Pratishtha Mohan Dutt, on the 30th Oct. 2008 gave me a rude shock. A great voyage blended with dowls of happiness, pangs of pain, testing and aborbing challenges, which we encountered commendably, came to an end.
She was the daughter of the late Dr. Mehta Vashisht Dev Mohan and Smt. (Dr.) Lajja Devi Mohan, the two eminent scholars. Like her parents, she was a voracious reader. She had a mini library, which even ircluded an Encyclopaedia Britannica. This library, though now depleted, still occupies its rightful and privileged place in the house. She was fond of old classics. It was her habit to take a book or a magazine or newspaper or a crossword, before going to bed. She took after her father immensely. She was blessed with an excellent genetic descent. She had the best grooming from her parents. And therefore, she grew up to command an impressive, lively and amiable personality, gifted with beauty, charm and an impeccable grace and, above all, simplicity was her hallmark. Among her three brothers, Samir, Rit and Cdr. Alok Mohan (IN), she was very close to Rit Mohan. Rit was not only present on the day of her demise but also attended all the other rituals right upto Haridwar, guiding his Bhanjas whom he dearly loves. Rit Mohan has fixed a Photo Mural in his residence at Panipat. Priti would be remembered by him and his spouse Smt. Sunita Mohan and son Master Tanme Mohan. As long as Tanme lives her Photo Mural would continue to occupy a permanent place in his residence and hence her entity for years together. Priti was involved in Tanme’s bringing up in his budding years, next only to his devoted, dedicated mother Smt. Sunita Mohan. Priti bore two sons, one of them (Dr. Amitabh Dutt (IN) is a Marine Commando in the Indian Navy), two grand children Shriaya and Arayan. She was totally involved in their bringing up. Both of them used to sleep with Dadi Maa. They would ring up their Dadi to cater to their choicest eats, before coming on vacation. Her three ChachaJees, the late Distt Judge Kapil Dev, the late Dr. Vishwa Mitter and Col. Jagdish Mitter, treated her as their daughter as well as sister. She was factually adored by all of them and by her Chachi-Jees. She was always the centre of attraction in any gathering. She was loved by all her cousins especially Rajiv and Capt. Monish (Indian Airlines). She shared cordial relations wherever we stayed. But her deep friendship grew with Dr. Usha Datta 833/2, Panchkula. They had come in contact in the 70’s and maintained the relationship since then till her last breath. Of late, she had grown very close to Smt. Promod Datta wife of Maj. R.C. Datta (Retd.) a 2nd World War veteran. She had deep regards for this couple. The other thick relationship she cultivated was with her ‘Sambandan’ Smt. Sadhna Datta w/o the late Advocate T.N. Datta. They used to talk for hours together on telephone. Interestingly, they hardly called on each other, except on some special occasions when it became mandatory. They never discussed their children except exchanging compliments on the success of their grand children’s exams/sports. As her name, ‘Pratishtha’, suggests, she spent her life with an exceptional dignity and authority in an elegant manner. She controlled the finances and administration of the house till her last day. She led her life on her own terms. I miss those moments when we used to debate current events. And, of course her gentle smile and occasional eerie silence, demonstrating her displeasure combined with anguish, which lasted till we took a cup of tea. As long as I live, I will be celebrating her birthday. Accordingly, I am remitting Rs.1100/- to GMS to be added to the already existing ‘Trust’ in the name of my parents “Smt. Diwan Devi & Mehta Diwan Chand Dutt of Tehi Dattan”, on her 62nd birthday, falling on the 16th May 2009. The prerogrative of remembering her death anniversary rests with our children. I am sure our daughter-in-law Smt. Sangeeta Dutt would do the needful. She has inherited fine ‘Sanskars’ from her parents.—Wg. Cdr. Mumtaz Bhadur Dutt (Retd.), #912, Sector-7, Panchkula-134109 Tel.: 0172-2596170, (M) 9888954732. SHRI SOM DUTT CHHIBBER & SMT. MEHTA: Shri Ran Veer Mehta (Bhimwal) was born on the 26th Sept. 1912 in village-”Banda Basali’’ near Rawalpindi. He was the elder son of Mr. Gyanchand Mehta (Bhimwal), who worked in the Head Post Office, Kashmiri Gate, Delhi. He did his initial schooling in Delhi and, later, was put in a Gurukul in Bhaun (Jhelum District). He completed his schooling, privately, in 1927, with first division, from the Board affiliated to the Punjab University. But his father did not permit him to study further.
He was a self-made man who worked his way up by doing various jobs in Mumbai and Pune. He was medically rejected for the Army due to injuries he had sustained during training in 1942 for an Emergency Commission and entered business. On the 9th Jan. 1935, Sh. R.V Mehta got married to Smt. Kusum in Mumbai. They had three daughters and three sons, Kumud the eldest (married to the late Sh. D.R. He learnt business the hard way and set up R.V. Mehta & Sons in 1945, in Calcutta. The beginning was humble with one room, partitioned, which served as office as well as factory-producing wire wound resistors. Gradually, the business developed and Shri R.V. Mehta started producing resistors, variables and other wire bound electric items. The factory space being insufficient, it was eventually shifted to a place in Beliaghata in Calcutta. His business flourished and the place at Beliaghata also started to get small to the expanding business. He then bought a place next to Uttar Para Railway Station in Howrah and set up his factory and the place at 14, Bentinck Street, Calcutta, became the Head Office. In March 1967, due to labour problems, he had to shut down his Uttar Para Factory and open it at a smaller place at 4, Totee Lane in Calcutta. In the meantime, his son, Ashok shifted to Delhi and, with the help of the machines retrieved from the Uttar Para factory set up a factory, and a branch of R.V. Mehta & Sons in Kirti Nagar Industrial Area, New Delhi. Shri Ran Veer and Smt. Kusum Mehta celebrated their ‘Golden Jubilee Wedding Anniversary on the 9th Jan. 1985. On the 7th Oct., 1985, Smt.
