MOHYAL MITTER

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK

Dear Brothers and Sisters,
First of all, I take this opportunity to convey to you my greetings on the occasion of Baisakhi, first of the Baisakh month corresponding to 13th of April that is celebrated in northern India, specially Punjab, as the start of the harvest season. In fact the festival is celebrated throughout India in different ways and in different customs and traditions with different names like Vishu in the South, Bihu in the North East etc. In this, we see the “unity in diversity” in India i.e. Bharat. The start of the New Year has been lucky for the Mohyal fraternity. On April 12, our local sabha at Ambala City inaugurated their newly constructed Mohyal Bhavan and an Allopathic Dispensary for the poor. The local sabha at Hoshiarpur performed the Bhoomi Poojan for the construction of their new bhavan. I once again convey my greetings and felicitations, to both these vibrant local sabhas.

The same unity in diversity we find in our Mohyal community divided into seven sub-castes, but united as one, like the strings of a Charpai. Although Mohyals have been in existence from time immemorial, they have been able to successfully maintain their individual identity in the national kaleidoscope, mainly because of the close relationships amongst all the sub-castes, their distinct customs, way of life and institutions like purohits, bards with their ballads, nais, mirasis etc. Being confined to a small geographically connected area in the north-west of the country, Mohyals intermarried and remained interrelated and interconnected throughout the millenniums of their existence. Unfortunately, other than this indirect evidence passed on orally, there is hardly any credible historical evidence to establish the Mohyals’ claim to antiquity.

It is now history as to how we have achieved our present status which finds mention in the Mohyal History. Therefore, I need not go into it any more.

As I briefly mentioned in the last issue, I would like to tell you more about MERIT (Mohyal Educational Research Institute of Technology) located at the Mohyal Foundation. It was set up in 1996 to impart basic computer education, which was a new emerging technology then.

MERIT has come a long way since and now conducts courses in various computer-oriented fields, viz “O”, “A” & “B” courses of DOEACC Society, Computer Operator & Programming Assistant (COPA) course of the Directorate of Training and Technical Education, Delhi, short term computer courses, such as MS Office, web designing, computer hardware, networking, internet browsing, C,C++, Project Training for B.Tech /MCA/Polytechnic students etc.

It is also an authorised Online Testing Centre for TOEFL –IBT for the last two years, (English language test for the students going abroad for higher studies especially in USA, UK, etc.) Prometric Testing Centre for professional exams, such as Microsoft, CCNA etc.

Many of the students passed out from the various courses in MERIT are now well-placed in the industry, both in India and abroad.

The local sabhas are a good platform to explain about MERIT and its courses, in their regular monyhly meetings, to encourage the Mohyal youth to make full use of this institution for making their career and become entrepreneurs.

Jai Hind! Jai Mohyal!

GROSS MIS-REPORTING

Shri S.K. Chhibber, IAS (Retd.) former Lt. Governor Mizoram, is one of the tallest Mohyals of our times and widely respected for his excellent qualities of head and heart. Unfortunately he has been recently embroiled in an unsavory controversy by the Tribune by splashing news on the front page of its issue of 25th March, 2009, which is grossly mis-leading. As a matter of fact Mr. Chhibber was an “Independent Non-executive’’ Director on the Board of M/s Bhiwani Denim and Apparel– a Public Limited Company, which became sick and went under BIFR. Some of the cheques issued by the Managing Director of this company in advance payments for purchase of raw materials were dishonoured. As a “non-working” Director, Mr. Chhibber had nothing to do with the day-to-day business of the company nor had he any financial interest or stake in it. The reporting was grossly exaggerated to create a media hype and Mr. Chhibber’s name was mentioned as he was the most eminent and celebrated person on the Board, along with that of another “non-working’’ Director, Padam Shri S.C. Chhabra IAS (Retd.)

The Tribune has since regretted the same in its 3rd April 2009 issue and an appeal is being filed by Mr. Chhibber under section 138 of the Negotiated Instruments Act. As per law, as a Non-executive Director Mr. Chhibber does not seem to have any liability in a matter like this.

Mr. Chhibber feels sad for the entire episode in which he has been dragged for no rhyme or reason and we assure him that we all love him for his devotion and dedication to the community and the entire fraternity is behind him.

B.D. Bali
President, GMS

WATER IS LIFE –
SAVE IT AND HARVEST THE FUTURE

v What is the value of water to you?
We drink it. We bathe and swim in it. We cook with it. But, have you thought about how much water is part of your daily life? Water is used in almost every manufacturing process from clothes to cars. In fact, almost every thing we touch every day has been made with water.
v World Water Day was observed on March 22, 2009.
v Only 1% of the earth’s water is suitable as drinking water.
v Let us take a pledge to conserve water and keep our natural bodies of water pure.
v Let us adopt water harvesting schemes in our colonies or neighborhood.
v Let us not throw garbage, plastics and other waste materials into water bodies.
v Let us preserve water every day.
v Close the tap after each use.
v See there is no leaking tap. Leaking of one drop will fill one bucket during night. Slow drip wastes 400 liters a day and fast one 3000 liters a day.
v Water in which the vegetables and fruits have been washed can be used to water the flowers and ornamental potted plants.
v When washing dishes by hand, don’t let the water run while rinsing.
v Run your washing machine and dish washer only when they are full and you could save 4500 liters a month.
v When you clean your fish tank, use the water you have drained on your plants. The water is rich in nitrogen and phosphorus, providing you with free and effective fertilizers.
v Create an awareness of the need for water conservation among your children.
v Let us take a moment to reflect on the importance of water in our daily life; a liquid we can not live without.
v Tomorrow will remember us for our positive deeds.

COMMUNITY NEWS CAPSULE

AMBALA CANTT

Date: 1st March 2009
Venue: 134 Vashisht Nagar, r/o Sh. Rajesh Vaid
Attendance: 16 Members,
In Chair: Sh. Shri M.S. Vaid

After Gayatri Mantra and Mohyal prayer, two minute’s silence was observed by the house to pay homage to the departed souls of the Mohyal brothers who passed away recently:

(a) Bk. Somveer Dutta s/o the late Sh. Prajapati expired on 19th Feb. 09 at his residence, 22A Mahesh Nagar Ambala Cantt. Funeral was attended by number of Mohyals. Rasam Pagri was performed on 28.02.09 at Gugga Peer Mandir.

(b) Shri B.D. Mehta (Dutta) passed away on 26th Feb. 09 Rasam Pagri was solemnised on 8.03.2009. A large gathering of Mohyals was present at both the occasions.

Proceedings of the last meeting were read out by Shri I.R. Chhibber and were confirmed.

The President apprised the members of the Bhoomi Pujan function and Foundation Stone laying ceremony of Mohyal Ashram Vrindavan by Mohyal Ratna Rzd. B.D. Bali on 14th Feb. 2009. He threw light on all the prominent Mohyals who spoke on the occasion and on the progress of the GMS right from the beginning till date.

Every Mohyal will be inspired by going through the details in the Mohyal Mitter of March 09 and the way donations from even children’s pocket money to the big amounts were given. Such gesture of Mohyals left one in no doubt about the collection of funds for the Vrindavan Ashram, and its completion by 13th April 2010. Eight Mohyals from Ambala Cantt had participated in the function. The arrangements by the GMS, right from picking up the Mohyals from the Railway Station Mathura, conveying them to the site (Ashram Vihar) at Vrindavan, their stay in various Dharamshalas, their food arrangements and again providing conveyance to all at the time of dispersal were excellent. Most memorable was the shouting of slogans “Jai Mohyal’’ at the ceremony which echoed in the atmosphere and was not less than the Oscar winning “Slumdog’’, song, “Jai Ho’’. The house congratulated Rzd. B.D. Bali and the whole team of GMS for making the event wonderful and successful. Members were requested to donate liberally for the Mohyal Ashram at Vrindavan.

The President urged the members to join and share the grief of other Mohyals at the time of distress, i.e., mourning of deaths etc. and to condole the bereaved family, just as we share the joy while attending functions like marriages and other joyful events.

The house was informed that the certificates for continuation of financial aid to widows in r/o 3 widows had been forwarded to GMS.

It was proposed by Sh. Deepak Dutta to enhance the annual subscription of the sabha from Rs. 60/- to Rs.120/-. A resolution to this effect was passed with voice vote. It was suggested by Sh. I.R. Chhibberji that members may enrol as life members of the local sabha by paying Rs. 1100 one time.

After the meeting, the members visited the house at 36 B Tribune Colony, Ambala Cantt of Sh. Inderjit Bali who had met with an accident in Ambala City, and that of Smt. Usha Bali a social worker and an old Mohyal activist, who was ill and was recovering her health gradually.

Date: 5th April 2009
Venue: Deepak Homes
Attendance: 17 Members,
In Chair: Sh. Shri M.S. Vaid, President.

House welcomed Smt. Usha Bali, r/o 14 Subhash Nagar, Smt. Deepa Dutta, r/o 147 Housing Board Colony, and Sh. D.C. dutta, r/o F-42/22 Dyal Bagh all of Ambala Cantt, who attended the meeting after a very long gap. They paid their sabha membership countribution to the Treasurer on the spot.

Happy News: Members were informed by Smt. Usha Bali, r/o 14 Subhash Nagar that her grand daughter (poti) Riya Bali passed her class-III by scoring 92% marks and topped all sections of her class in S.D. Public school. Dadi Usha Bali distributed sweets and donated Rs. 101/- each to GMS and local sabha, on this occasion:

Congratulations to Riya Bali Dadi Usha Bali and parents.

The house greeted this news by clapping and congratulations and wished her success in her political career. She promised to pay Rs. 100/- per month to the local sabha in all monthly meetings. Many many thanks to Deepa ji for boosting the morale of the sabha.

House was informed that there was no trace of Registration number of Mohyal Youngmen Association and no documentary evidence in this regard. It is mandatory to get registered first before asking for donations from the community. President assured early action in the matter by liaisoning with the district authorities of Ambala. Idea of construction of Mohyal Bhawan Ambala Cantt can be thought of later.

It was felt that members were very casual in paying the subscription for Mohyal Mitter and do not respond during the month of Dec. They pay the amount piece meal which creates on embarassing situation for the cashier as well as GMS for despatch of MM. To avoid inconvenience, it was decided to send the money in one lot in Dec. with a detailed list of those desirous of subscribing to Mohyal Mitter. The amount could be paid from sabha fund and collected from the members concerned by the cashier after wards.

Regarding sabha membership, all Mohyals including widows in receipt of financial help from GMS must pay contribution to strengthen the sabha and its unity.

Cashier Shri Rajesh Vaid, once again requested the President to relieve him from the responsibility of Treasurer due to his ill health. Sh. M.K Vaid was nominated to take over from Sh. Rajesh Vaid with complete details and briefings on the subject and a certificate signed by both the members and the President.

Smt. Usha Bali, Smt. Deepa Dutta, Shri Deepak Dutta, Shri Rajesh Vaid, Shri Naresh Vaid, Shri Sunil Dutta.

He got married to Sarla Devi Choudharani, the niece of Rabindranath Tagore in 1905. She was the first woman political leader of her time and was the leader of the anti-British Govt. Her father Janakinath Ghoshal was one of the earliest Secretaries of the Indian National Congress.

Pandit Rambhuj Dutt Choudhary did a lot of work to uplift the depressed classes of Punjab. People of depressed classes even now celebrate his birth day. The depressed classes of Gurdaspur district still regard him as their Guru. A memorial (Pandit Rambhuj Dutt Veda Shala) was set up by the late Sh. G.D. Birla ji, The Foundation Stone of the memorial was laid by Smt. Kasturba Gandhi ji, near Awankha (Gurdaspur) Sh. Jagjivan Ram and many other national leaders had graced his birth day celebrations there.

Pandit Rambhuj Dutt Choudhary and his wife Sarla Devi Choudharani became followers of Gandhi in 1919 and sent their son Dipak to Gandhiji’s Ashram for education. Gandhiji admired them for their a patriotism and spirit of self-sacrifice. He told the people of Gujrat that the message of Rambhuj Dutt which, according to him, was also the message of entire Punjab was fearlessness. It asks you never to accept defeat, come what may, to love God and work on with patience and fortitude. His devotion to Swadeshi raised him in the estimation of Gandhi ji. His decision to exclude all foreign cloth on the marriage of his son received Gandhiji’s praise. He was close to revolutionaries like Sardar Ajit Singh (uncle of Bhagat Singh), Lala Lajpat Rai, Lala Harkishan Lal and Master Amir Chand. He led the relief work at the time of Kangra earthquake.

A lawyer by profession, Rambhuj Dutt Choudhary was drawn into the Congress movement early in his life. He was one of the few leaders of the Punjab who took keen interest in the activities of the Congress during its early period. At its Lahore Session in 1900, he seconded the resolution condemning the exclusion of Indians from Superior Public Services. He also supportedthe resolution on famine, poverty and land revenue at its Banaras Session. At its twenty-third session, he moved a resolution demanding that careers in the army might be thrown open to Indians in its higher ranks. He represented Punjab on a committee appointed at the twenty-fifth session of the Congress at Allahabad to prepare an Address to be presented to the Viceroy and Governor-General of India. The resolution thanking the Government of India and the Secretary of State for annulling the partition of Bengal passed at the twenty-sixth session also received his support. He condemned the policy of racial discrimination of the Government of Canada at the 28th session of the Congress at Karachi.

He opposed the Rowlatt Act and took prominent part in the agitation against this legislation. He composed a song at this time the refrain of which was “Kadi Nahin Harna, Bhaven Sadi Jan Jave”. This song caught the imagination of the people of the province. He presided over the memorable meeting in Lahore called to protest against the Rowlatt Act.

His fearless attacks on the Government added to his rising popularity and the British Government arrested him on April 14, 1919, along with Harkishan Lal and Duni Chand in the Lahore Conspiracy case as a result of which he was sentenced to transportation for life and his property confiscated. He was described as the Chief Spokesman of the Conspiracy. He was released by the Secretary of State, Montagu, to created favourable atmosphere for introduction of his reforms.

Like Lajpat Rai and Swami Sharaddhanand, Rambhuj Dutt Choudhary was a prominent member of the Arya Samaj. He was a forceful advocate of National Education.

He was a well known journalist and launched two newspapers in Urdu & English. He was the member of the Municipal Corporation, Lahore and took very active part in civic affairs. He was also a Working Committee Member of the Indian National Congress and President of the Punjab Congress Committee during pre-independent India. He went to England in September 1908 to explain to the British Government the cause of unrest in the Punjab province and the Government had to implement his scheme to cool down the unrest in the province.

Gandhi Ji had brotherly relations with Rambhuj Dutt Choudhary and Sarla Devi and he proposed to Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru to get Indira married to Dipak Dutt, the son of Pandit Rambhuj Dutt & Sarla Devi but the proposal could not materialize due to some reasons. Their son Dipak got married to the grand daughter of Mahatma Gandhi, Radha.

Sarla Devi was also a well known journalist. She was the Editor of Bharti news paper which had been founded by her uncle, Rabindranath Tagore. She herself wrote numerous articles and songs and contributed to the excellence of the journal. She expressed her views through the journal. The three ideas she presented through her writing were, first one must not be afraid to die in the service of nation, second, a person should have strong and healthy body to lead a worthy life and third if the British insult one, one should take immediate action oneself without waiting for legal justice. Sarla Devi also rendered valuable service in the cause of literature and freedom movement. In Punjab, Sarla Devi started working for the spread of education among women and for their upliftment. She set up the Bharat Stree Mahamandal, an all India organization of women. She was the General Secretary of this organization. She also promoted Parda Pratha Unmoolan. She also took active part in the freedom movement along with her husband.

Both, Rambhuj Dutt Choudhary and his wife Sarla Devi, were a champions of the freedom movement and deserve to be honoured for their selfless contribution to the freedom struggle, upliftment of women, weaker sections and patriotic literature which had inspired many to jump into the freedom struggle.

PRESERVING THE FAMILY HISTORY AND VANSHAVALI OF MOHYALS - FACILITY AT MOHYAL ASHRAM HARIDWAR

Fortune knocked at my door late. It was only recently that I could come to pay homage at the Mohyali Temple that is the Mohyal Ashram, Haridwar. Earlier visitors have extensively described, through these columns, the serene, sacred and spiritually stimulating ambience at the Ashram. In the Dining Hall, expression of gratitude to Rzd. B.D. Bali, and the GMS, for providing this opportunity for the fraternity to get together at this holy place, is often overheard. House-keeping at the premises is excellent and unobtrusive; the food is almost like what you get at home; the staff is efficient and courteous; and, the library has a fairly good collection of books.

Like all Tirthasthans, Haridwar is also almost always overcrowded and the Yatris keep jostling on the Ghats and in the bazaars. Amidst this, one finds the Meditation Hall in the Mohyal Ashram an oasis of tranquility. It has the proper ambience for de-stressing and seeking a state of cosmic consciousness. One feels that installing a temple of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, as proposed, will add to the sanctity of the place-preserving its calm and noiseless atmosphere, outside the prescribed Puja timings.

Our Mohyal ancestors were mostly Shaivites. Dutt rulers of Kabul (tenth century AD) had the Nandi bull and Trishul on their coins, which continued to be used by Vaid rulers of Punjab also, without minting coins on their own.

VANSHAVALIS: Traditionally, our respective Purohits (Pandas) at Haridwar had been maintaining particulars of our ancestors, who had visited this holy place in the past. This record helped in reconstructing our Vanshavalis or family trees. With changing times, this institution is gradually getting dysfunctional. Suggestions have often been made that we should start maintaining such records at the Mohyal Ashram Haridwar. In a recent meeting of the Managing Committee of GMS, it was mentioned that seven caste- wise registers were being maintained at the Reception of the Mohyal Ashram, for recording their particulars by our Mohyal brethren visiting the Ashram. Perhaps this needs to be publicised, since the visitors to the Ashram are probably unaware of this facility, as they have generally not been recording their Vanshavalies in these registers.

To prepare one’s family tree, one has to begin with finding out the names of one’s ancestors, for as many generations as one can, from elders or from the Pandas in Haridwar. One should bring this, when coming on a visit to the Ashram at Haridwar. For example, the Mohans of Pind Dadan Khan stock have a comprehensive Vanshavali, for sixteen generations, covering about 250 years, and a copy of this is available with the GMS at the Mohyal Foundation, New Delhi, as well as at the Mohyal Ashram Haridwar. This can be consulted by those, who are descendants of a Mohan family of Pind Dadan Khan stock.

The Caste Register at the Ashram has two sections. First, there is an Alphabetical Index. In this, one has to enter one’s name, father’s name, town of permanent residence and original place in Pakistan, if known. In case one is making an entry for the first time, one has to select the next available blank (numbered) page in the relevant register and make the entries, as per the headings printed, on the left and right hand sides of the page. The heading “Origin and Family Background” is intended to cover information about the family’s ancestors, i.e. Vanshavali, also. Under this, one may write one’s Vanshavali, across the columns. Any significant facts about the family’s past, which one would like to share with one’s future generations, may also be recorded herein. This page number may be entered against one’s name in the Alphabetical Index.

These two pages now stand allotted to the family of the person concerned. All subsequent entries being made by him/her and the other members of the family (brothers, sons, grandsons) should appear on these pages only (till these are full, when one should move to a new page/register after making cross references).

This procedure differs from the traditional system followed by the Pandas in one significant aspect. There will be no intermediary to go through the registers and locate the earlier entries for updating. One (or a member of one’s family, visiting the Ashram subsequently), will have to carefully scan the Alphabetical Index of visitors in the relevant Caste Register and locate from it the page number of the family’s earlier record. This will also enable one to check whether the particulars (father’s name, town of permanent residence and original place in Pakistan) had been properly entered in the Index, on the first occasion

The Flowing Stream of Life

THE existence of God is manifest in everday affairs. He is not in any gurdwara, temple, church or mosque. One can easily feel Him in everyday music of a composer, in the voice of a singer, in the paintings of a painter, in the writings of an author. He’s there in a monument, in a sculpture, in the innocent smile of a child standing half naked with running nose, in the sigh of a mother aggrieved by the loss of her progeny. One finds Him in friends and even in foes, in critics.

One can discover God by reconciling your different selves– the good, the bad and the ugly.

If there is a God, who uses us to make saints out of such material as we are, the devil too may have his ambitions, and may even dream of training such a person as his wont.

Guard yourself from being influenced by the teachings and preachings of any baba, any guru, any mata, or any moral brigade, on how to be pious. For God is there within; certainly not in the distance, but here and now. Don’t waste time in prayers or in meditation. The only prayer is one’s work. Meditation is not to hurt anyone. It helps one have a clear mind, it gives a good night’s sleep. And to enjoy the fruits of work to the hilt.

Uncertainty drives people to seek answers in religious practice. One turns to God to find solace from one’s misfortunes or seek favours for whatever one aspires to. Happiness or that “sense of inner peace’’ does not come from the realisation of desires. Accept life, situations and people around for what they are and not what they should be. Never think of yesterday. For everything is now.

It also means that we limit our wants as there is no limit to greed. You cannot have God and Mammon on the same pedestal.

We all have our contradictions and multiple identities. There are many selves within each of us. Which self will assert itself at any given point depends on what has influenced us at that particular stage. We are constantly evolving. What we are today is not what we were yesterday. Life is like a stream which has to flow forward on its journey. The minute the water gets stagnant, it gets polluted-Change is the only certainty and acceptance of that gives one peace of mind.

Dhanwanti Mehta. Date of Langar: 3rd May.

Shri Madan Mohan Singh Bhai Chhibber (M.M. Bhai or Bhai Ji) (DOB – 13/09/1927) is the son of the late Shri D.K. Bhai Chhibber of Multan and the late Smt. Somavanti Chhibber. He had his early education at Chandausi (near Moradabad) in the Sacred Heart School (Multan) and at Lyallpur (DAV School) and at Gol Baug, Lahore (SD School, from where he passed matriculation in 1944. He started his college education in FC College, Lahore, and, after the partition in 1947, completed B.Sc. (Hons.) in the Camp College, Delhi. Later, he did MA (Economics) from the Victoria College.

He briefly worked with M/s. Mohan Meakin Breweries at Solan, as an Apprentice Brewer, and left the company for better prospects. He started an Ice & Cold Storage Factory in Chittaranjan, West Bengal, where he set up a plant, along with his elder brother, the late Shri V.P. Bhai. He built up clientele for the ice through retail outlets, candy shops, pan shops and Govt. factories (for storing fish, for which he traveled extensively, in the fishing areas along the river Ganga, in West Bengal and Bihar). One of his big clients was M/s. KEW, who bought sizeable quantities of ice from his factory, regularly, for eight months in a year.

Bhai Ji married Smt. Nirmala (DOB – 10/05/1933) d/o the late Shri Bansi Lal Mehta (Vaid) and the late Smt. Durga Devi, of Pind Dada Khan (now in Pak.) in 1955. Her father was Personnel Officer in the Railways and, after partition, had settled, first in Lucknow, and later, in Allahabad. Smt. Nirmala did her early schooling in Lucknow and later learnt classical music from the Marris College, Lucknow. She completed her graduation from Allahabad University, when her father was posted at Allahabad, and MA, in 1955. She worked in the Railway School at Chittaranjan for a short period.

Bhai Ji shifted to Mumbai in 1964 to start air-conditioning business, on the invitation of his elder brother, the late Shri V.P. Bhai. He set up a company for manufacturing central air-conditioning plants, for various ranges upto 250 tons. His clients included BMC, Western/Central Railways, Hindustan Aeronautics, and MES (at Mhow, Tuglkabad, Lucknow, Varanasi Talwara etc.). He used to work day and night to build up his business.

When Smt. Nirmal Bhai Chhibber shifted to Mumbai in 1964, along with her husband, she had been selected as a playback singer, because of her melodious voice. But, on the advice of her nephew, the late Shri Anand Bakshi, Lyricist, she dropped the idea and decided to be a full time home-maker. At 75, now, she is at the golden period of her life, and divides her time between travel, Bhajans, Kirtans etc. She has accompanied her husband in all his travels; and, recently, had been to the Vacation House at Bhimshankar Hills, Maharashtra, of her son-in-law, and enjoyed the sunrise there with her grand children.

Bhai Ji is fond of classical music. He also learnt painting from Govt. School of Arts, Lahore, and later, Gole Market, from Shri B. Sanyal. He used to play tennis and won several cups. He was also the Vice Captain of the FC College Lahore Baseball team. He was fond of horse riding too. But, after he got involved in his new business at Mumbai, he had no time for indulging in these hobbies. He handed over his business to his son, Shri Rajeev Chhibber in 2002. He is now busy organising agricultural activity on about 40 acres of farm land near Mangaon, on the Bombay-Goa High Road.

The couple has two daughters, Annu Rakesh Sethi & Manish Neeraj Bhatia, and one son, Rajeev Chhibber who is the youngest, (wife Anupama nee Bali from Chandigarh) all happily married and well-settled; and six grand children, who are all very fond of him, calling him dadu or dadaji and nanu or nanaji.

Bhai Ji is as active as ever, despite being a heart patient; he is also fond of sweets though diabetic. Even at this age, he continues to travel around the country, with his wife, on pilgrimages and sight-seeing trips. Recently he had been on a 6000 km road trip to South India (Coorg, Munnar, Kodaikanal, Yercaud, Ooty, the backwaters of Kerala, Rameswaram and Nanded- Shirdi), with his wife, two younger sisters and brother-in-law (Shri Krishan Mehta, President MS Haridwar). He is also fond of rafting and used to indulge in this sport till age 75.

He is a staunch Mohyal and a strict disciplinarian and hard task master, both at home and office. He has inculcated a sense of pride in his children for being Mohyals. He has always volunteered to help people in need.

The couple celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary on the 7th February 2009. On this occasion, Shri M.M. Bhai donated Rs. 11000/- towards the Langar Fund at the Mohyal Ashram, Vrindavan.

We, the children, wish our Mummy and Daddy, Smt. Nirmal Bhai and Shri M.M Bhai Ji, a healthy and happy life. And we continue to ask God and Parents to guide us and bless us in our endeavors. Always with us. Always for us. HARIDWAR THE GATEWAY TO THE GODS
By
SANJEEV MEHTA (Haridwar)

HARIDWAR- Situated on the banks of River Ganga & the Himalayan foothills, surrounded by the National Park associated with both, Lord Shiva & Lord Vishnu, Haridwar is amongst the seven sacred cities of India. No wonder, Gods themselves have chosen to reside here, in these serene, sub-zero surroundings. The Gateway to the Char Dham Yatra of Badrinath, Kedarnath, Yamunotri and Gangotri, promising Nirvana (salvation), element in a Hindu’s itinerary on Earth, Haridwar, the eternal city of Temples, Ashrams, Meditation & Yoga centres, Ayurveda, Ganga Darshan and Aarti (prayer), with hundreds of pilgrims offering cupped leaves with saffron marigold petals and a small candle flame.

Legend has it that the holy Ganga, the holiest of all rivers which flows through Haridwar, has actually been sanctified by the powerful Trinity of Hindu mythology, at the centre of the Hindu pantheon-Lord Brahma, Vishnu & Mahesh.

Down the ages, the importance of Haridwar, as ever-refreshing mystique venue for the purification of the mind, body & soul gained more impetus... and, today, manifests in two great events, the memorable Kumbh Mela, which happens every twelve years, and the Ardh Kumbh Mela, which happens after every six years. Yet, beyond this mystic aura and mythology, Haridwar casts another magic spell on the visitors. Being one of the oldest cities, Haridwar finds mention in the ancient Hindu scriptures, as it weaves through the life and time stretching from the period of Buddha to the more recent British advent. It is also mentioned as ‘Mayapuri’, ‘Ganga Dwar’, ‘Moksh Dwar’ in the ancient scriptures and epics. Of such significance is Haridwar in the thought of India’s traditional Hindus that it has earned its sobriquet of honour, “The Gateway to the Gods’’.

Other very important attraction about Haridwar, is that, lots of people of the Hindu faith want their last rites to be performed here, not only the ashes to be immersed in the Holy Ganga, but also, to be cremated on the banks of Mother Ganga. So, it is one of the few places in the country, where, apart from the marked cremation grounds, one can cremate a body on the banks of the Ganga River anywhere, and it has the same sanctity. Then there are the Pandas (the Holy Priests) for every community or family, who, from generations, have been keeping record of the people visiting here for different occasions, may it be birth, death, marriage or simply a visit to this holy township, where one can go more than 10 generations back to find their family tree, and look for some message written by their elders for the future generations, or find the where abouts of one’s close relatives & cousins who visited here, when & why.

Haridwar and its surrounding areas of Garhwal, with its innumerable shrines, embedded in history and beauty, is not just a destination of the Devout, the Spiritual or Nature-gazer, it is also the gate for the daring go-getter, the adventure- seeker, the crazy explorer, be it river rafting, kayaking, trekking, mountaineering, wild life safari, beach camping, tribal tours, also a centre for herbal medicines & traditional studies at Gurukul Kangri etc.

But, the place gained instant fame with the foreigners, in 1961, when the Beatles, the well-known Band Group, came here to stay with their Guru, in his Ashram. Today Rishikesh has become a centre of learning and research in Yoga & Meditation as an instrument of mental and physical health.

Rishikesh is one of the best-located centres of learning along the right bank of the Holy Ganga. The river emerges through high mountains not far from here, runs deep and silent through the thickly wooded hills of the tarai, which straddles this region, Breathtaking experience of natural beauty and undiscovered wildlife awaits here. Not to mention the peace & tranquility of a landscape associated with the Munis and meditation. According to legend, Sage Ribhya Rishi undertook staunch penance at Rishikesh to please the God.

The celebrated spiritual centre, across the other side of the Ganga at Rishikesh, called the Swarg Ashram area, is situated amidst a calm environment, impressive waterfront, dense forest and hills. The place commands a panoramic view of the Ganga valley and is, now, virtually a town of saints, sages and scholars. Being a large religious centre and a famous place for pilgrims, Rishikesh is a popular venue for many festivities. The important feature is its Ashrams, some of which are world-renowned. The Ashrams generally provide accommodation to visitors undergoing courses of study there. However, tourists too are accommodated at the discretion of the management.

SOCIAL
REFORMS

J.S. Bali
SOCIAL REFORMS
are easier said than done. Social customs are rooted in generations of ancestors following certain social practices needed in the society of the days gone by. Conditions have changed. But the customs have remained the same. Do we need to bring about reforms, consciously and deliberately, through legislation and changes in social mores? Legislation is an easier path than trying to introduce changes in the social traditions.

We of the Mohyal Sabhas meet regularly, but seldom discuss social reforms. Does it mean that we do not need any?

I made a list of a score of points on the topic this morning. I came to the conclusion what my mother-in-law used to say: Chalde ghode nun chabak naheen maarni chahee di (do not whip the running horse). Leave well enough alone. The very fact that some of us meet regularly in a social group of the extended family of Mohyals, is enough.

Will trying to do more destroy the present practice also? It may. For, when I ask myself: Are you willing to give your time and energy for the leg-work needed to bring about social reforms? My answer is: No. Hence I do not qualify to talk about the topic.

Still, having given some time to the subject, let me list some of the social reforms I thought we need, or at least ask some questions about the subject. A wise man says: Asking the right questions is more important than finding the right answers.

Son-syndrome of our society; does it need a change? Female foeticide, practiced by even the educated among us; do we need to condemn it repeatedly in each meeting till the message goes home? Do the parents honestly follow the law of the land and give equal property to their daughters? Have we reduced the dowry in any way? Have we reduced expenditure on dhoom dhaam in the marriage ceremonies? Should irretrievable breakdown of marriage be a valid reason for legal dissolution of marriage?

Is caste a curse of the Hindu society? Do our caste associations promote social division? Are not Mohyal Sabhas casteist group coming in the way of unity of the Hindus? Are the shudras or dalits reconciled with their discrimination based upon birth? Should such birth-based castes be dissolved? How many of us pay a visit to an unknown Mohyal family on happy or sad occasions?

Are Mohyals a developed or under-developed community needing social action or activism? Do the Mohyal Sabhas need separate registration so that they can ultimately have their own building or property, purchased or donated by a member?

Are Mohyal Sabhas, clubs or associations with a mission and a mandate? What have the Sabhas done to promote affordable health facilities? Have we cared to contact or at least write to the hundreds of Mohyal families who are not our members? Will trying to jump higher break our knees?

Are we satisfied with the status quo?

Most of us who meet regularly are in the afternoon or evening of our lives. This is the stage of lower energy and even lesser means for some. My coming to the Sabha meetings promotes my contact with some others of the same feather. It is enough for me. Every one has multiple identities– your professional group, your circle of friends and acquaintances, your neighbours, etc. But sitting in this Mohyal group, I feel I am sitting with my family.

After all, blood is thicker than water.

ANTIM YATRA

MAN’S SPIRIT IS IMMORTAL

Our scriptures tell us that childhood, old age and death are incident only to this perishable body of ours, and that man’s spirit is eternal and immortal. That being so, why should we fear death? The eternal truth of life. And where there is no fear of death, there can be no sorrow over it either.

G.M.S. expresses its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prays to God to grant eternal peace to the departed souls and strength to their families to bear with fortitude their irreparable loss.

SHRI SANJEEV DUTTA (30.9.1960–June 2008): In the fond memory of my husband, the late Sh. Sanjeev Dutta, s/o Shri Madan Lal Dutta and grandson of Sh. Laxman Dass. You were born to be a fighter all life. No one can beat you in courage. With a weak heart you could drive smiling; you were brave you were social; you were smart; you were outspoken; you nourished your relations with care and warmth for nothing; you were so loving that even God could not live without you, Sanjeev; and he snatched you away from me for ever.

You had big incisions all over your body, big wounds after your second open heart surgery at Max Hospital. Seven and a half months’ stay in hospitals could break any one but you carried on with a smile so that I may not be hurt, you bore the pain for me, you lived for me. Oh! God, how I wished i could take your pain. Day and night I tried, tried and tried. I was fired by near ones, I was humiliated and, without communication, you felt my pain and forgot yours, Sanjeev.

Why you made me realize now that you really loved me with this depth, why destiny had been so harsh with us? We did good to all. We were so close during your illness for seven and a half months from Dec.07 to July 08 till your last-twenty four seven-as never before and it was then that we realized how dearly we thought of each other. We remained busy life-long with business and other matters that we seldom realized the intensity of ourselves.

I know you were hurt badly by some dear ones around, the feeling of being cheated just to keep us away.. now we realized the depth.

How could this be, Sanjeev? Am I living or reliving a dream?. We were so close and so lonely in those last months with a handful of some good friends who stood by us always. Wish we could choose our relatives.

It’s a deep pain inside but you gifted me my dream and your brilliant daughter, Bhoomika, who made you proud, during the last days, at Fortis, with her Xth result.

Our dream, the school you got constructed, Magnum International School, at Doraha, Punjab.. is keeping you alive. On every tiny little face, we see you smiling every day at Destiny and the World-you outlived both.

We dedicated Sanjeev Dutta Memorial Day on 30th Sept. to you. Birthday awards for bright students and Sanjeev Dutta Scholarship awards to be given every year and we felt you alive all around us.

I will never let you die. You will live, you will stay, you can never die because people like you are born to live in the firmament of many memories with your warmth, like an ever shining star.

I miss you every moment but I see you in every little face of hope... I am and will remain proud of you, Sanjeev.–Hem Dutta, A2/350, Sector-8, Rohini, New Delhi-110085.

AN APPEAL

It has been observed that some of the local sabhas and individuals send their proceedings/articles for publication in the Mohyal Mitter, direct to the Dutta Press. This creates avoidable problems.

All local sabhas as also individuals are therefore requested not to do so and send their proceedings/articles only to the General Mohyal Sabha at A-9, Qutab Institutional Area, USO Road, New Delhi-110067. These should be sent so as to reach the GMS on or before the 15th of the month, for these to be published in the next issue of the Mohyal Mitter. –Editor MM.
