49 years of wedded life embellished with love, happiness & deep understanding
The GMS Managing Committee meeting held on the 9th March 2008 was an occasion for celebration too. Shri D.V. Mohan announced, amid joyous applause, that the first couple of GMS, Rzd. B.D. Bali and Smt. Nita Bali, were celebrating the Golden Jubilee year of their ‘Blissful Bondage’ this month. They had been united in wedlock on the 1st March 1959. The announcement was followed by a flood of greetings, bouquets and flowers from members to the ‘anniversary couple’. (Smt. Nita Bali also was present on this special occasion.) Encomiums were paid to Rzd. B.D. Bali by all those present. Shri G.L. Datta ‘Josh’ recalled his association with Rzd. B.D. Bali from the time he was elected President in August 1978. During these years, he had learnt a lot from him. In his inimitable style, Shri ‘Josh’ recited some urdu couplets, suiting the occasion, lauding the services rendered to the Mohyal community by Rzd. B.D. Bali. He congratulated the couple from the depth of his heart and wished them many more years of wedded bliss. To him, the beaming and happy couple still looked young. He also noted that the weather that day had turned ‘bahar’ i.e., spring, to suit the occasion. Shri S.K. Chhibber IAS (Retd.) said that he had known Rzd. B.D. Bali for the last many years and what impressed him most was the fact that he had all the qualities of a great leader. Shri S.K. Chhibber could not think of any person other than Rzd. Bali, who was free from any controversy. He thanked God Almighty for his kindness in giving us a leader like him. The job of President GMS, when he had been elected, had not been an easy one for him. He had to face the challenge of parallel GMS. Nobody knew where GMS will go. But Rzd. B.D. Bali overcame all challenges, with service as his motto, and brought up the GMS to what it is today. For the last few years, GMS has been on the upward march and was prospering. The Mohyal community has been lucky to have him at the helm. Rzd. B.D. Bali was good at public relations and a good judge of character, which traits are not possessed by many. He was unique and Shri S.K. Chhibber, while expressing his personal admiration to him, wished him many more long years of service to the community. Shri Chhibber also revealed that Rzd. B.D. Bali did not take any step without consulting his wife. Her inputs could be seen in the ambience of the Mohyal Ashram at Haridwar. Shri P.K. Datta described Rzd. B.D. Bali and Smt. Nita Bali as a magnetic couple. Shri O.P. Mohan narrated the recent Benares experience to bring home the point that Rzd. B.D. Bali was ever willing to come forward and help any good cause. Dr. Rattan Datta called Rzd. B.D. Bali as his ‘temporal leader’ and wished the couple well. Others who congratulated him included Shri Darshan Lal Bali, Dr. Ashok Lav, Shri N.D.Datta, Smt. Amba Bali, Lt.Col. BKL Chhibber (Retd.), Shri Rit Mohan, Shri V.K. Bali (CMC), Shri Ashwani Bakshi, Shri J.P. Mehta, Shri O.P. Mohan of Rohini, Shri S.C. Mehta of West Zone, Shri Gulshan Vaid, Smt. Krishan Lata Chhibber and Shri Ram Sarup Dutt. Shri Sandeep Datta of Janakpuri extracted a promise from Rzd. B.D. Bali and Mrs. Bali that there would be a grander celebration of their Golden Jubilee anniversary next year. Responding to the accolades, Rzd. B.D. Bali stated that he was overwhelmed and felt humble by the invaluable love showered by the members. He went back in time and recalled as to how he, from a middle class family, had been chosen as the bride groom by the wealthy Shri N.N. Mohan for his daughter’s hand. Shri N.N. Mohan had prescribed only two requirements for his prospective son-in-law, i.e., the boy should be of good character and he should be a Mohyal. That is how a middle class boy like him could marry a rich girl, the daughter of Shri N.N. Mohan. Rzd. B.D. Bali felt as if they had been married only yesterday. His association with the GMS over the last 25 years in the service of the community had been eventful. The GMS had dared to reach the sky and succeeded. On this occasion, he gratefully recalled the contribution of the late Smt. Brij Rani Vaid, whose contribution of Rs. 22 lakhs formed the seed money for the construction of the Mohyal Foundation, which had been foundering for lack of funds. But for this invaluable contribution, the GMS may not have achieved such lofty heights. Rzd. B.D. Bali also lauded the sane advice given to him at that time by Lt. Gen.(Retd.) Z.C. Bakshi for forming the “Amarnath and Brij Rani Memorial Trust” with the contribution given by the late Smt. Brij Rani Vaid. He also greeted Bhai Mahavir, Shri S.K. Chhibber and Lt. Gen. Z.C. Bakshi (Retd.), the most decorated soldier, and thanked them for their presence on this occasion. Bhai Mahavir was the descendant of the great Mohyals and patriots like Bhai Mati Dass, Bhai Sati Dass and Bhai Paramanand. At his instance, the members gave a standing ovation to the trio of Mohyal stalwarts, viz., Bhai Mahavir, Shri S.K. Chhibber IAS (Retd.) and Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Z.C. Bakshi. He thanked everybody, on his own and his wife’s behalf, for their love and affection and for the sentiments expressed by them and added that he would try to justify their expectations from him. These had given him further fuel to serve the community. He promised that he would continue to serve the community for as long as he was alive. On this happy occasion, he announced a donation of Rs.4900/- to the GMS to mark their 49th Wedding Anniversary. Towards the end of the meeting, Shri S.N. Datta and Shri D.V. Mohan also added their greetings and encomiums to Rzd.B.D. Bali and Smt. Nita Bali. Shri S.N. Datta requested the members to close their eyes and visualise the institutions, Mohyal Ashram, Sewa Sadan, Mohyal Bhawan, Mohyal Foundation created under the stewardship of Rzd. B.D. Bali. Everyone then dispersed to partake in the grand lunch hosted by the ‘Jubilee Couple’. —Shri Ranganathan
MAJOR AMAR NATH CHHIBBER the magnanimous donor
Major Amar Nath Chhibber (Retd.) of B-64 Defence Colony, Meerut, departed for his celestial abode on the 14th March 2008, at the Jaswant Rai Hospital, Meerut, due to cardiac arrest, caused by the bursting of a cyst in his stomach. He belonged to Mirpur, Pakistan Occupied Kashmir and was the son of the late Bakshi Narshing Das Chhibber. He had retired from the Army in the year 1986 and had, along with his very religious wife, Mrs. Nirmal Kumari Chhibber, devoted himself to the service of mankind, particularly needy Mohyals. His wife, Smt. Nirmal Kumari Chhibber had predeceased him in the year 2003, leaving him forelorn, as they were issueless. His cremation the same evening, was attended by GMS President Rzd. B.D. Bali, Shri G.L. Datta ‘Josh’ Vice-President, Shri Dharam Vir Mohan Secretary General and Shri Ashwani Bali, Secretary (PR). Rzd. B.D. Bali laid a wreath and shawl on the body of the deceased. The ceremonial funeral was arranged by Col. Ashish Chhibber, Officer Commanding (Signals), Meerut, attended by, besides the GMS representatives and Defence Service officers, a large number of local Mohyals and friends, including his nephew, Col. S.K. Chhibber (Retd.), Col. S.K. Vaid (Retd.), his neighbour and President of the Mohyal Sabha, Meerut, and other office-bearers of the local sabha.
Uthala ceremony was performed at his residence at Meerut on the 17th March 2008, attended, among others, by Rzd. B.D. Bali. On this occasion, Rzd. B.D. Bali, while paying his tributes to the noble departed soul, highlighted his qualities of head and heart. He said that Major A.N. Chhibber was always ready to help the poor and the needy and was, in fact, paying for the rations to some poor families. He was a staunch Mohyal and the welfare of the biradari was always at the core of his heart. He had been closely associated with the GMS as a Parthisht member, a Mohyal Mitter Trustee and, for some time, as a member of its Managing Committee. He was an embodiment of simplicity, deep commitment, absolute faith and integrity in the GMS, a dedicated Mohyal and a great philanthropist. He had, some time back, donated Rs. 3 lakhs for two rooms in the Mohyal Sewa Sadan, Haridwar, in his own name and in the name of his late wife, Smt. Nirmal Kumari Chhibber. Rzd. B.D. Bali further stated that late Maj. Chhibber was personally very close to him. In fact he had written a personal letter, probably his last letter, to him on March 10, 2008 received by him on March 14, 2008 when he had returned to his residence at Delhi after the cremation of Maj. Chhibber. Before the formal Uthala ceremony, all present were served Preeti Bhoj, by the GMS, in the memory of the late Major Sahib. His generosity and philanthropy did not end with his passing away. His parting gift to the community was his bequest, through his last will and testament, of all his properties, both movable and immovable, worth over a crore of rupees, to the GMS, to be used for the welfare of the community. Rzd. B.D. Bali, while expressing his sentiments, stated that it was a big responsibility which Chhibber Sahib had placed on GMS and that every effort will be made to fulfil his cherished desires and aspirations to serve the community and the humanity at large. His ashes were immersed in the holy Ganga at Kankhal, Haridwar, on the 17th March 2008 by a team comprising Shri D.V.Mohan, Secretary General, GMS, Shri Ashwani Bali, Secretary (PR) GMS, and Col. S.K. Chhibber (Retd.), nephew of the late Maj. A.N. Chhibber.
On this sad occasion, GMS pays its heartfelt tributes to this noble and philanthropic member of the fraternity and pray to God Almighty to grant eternal peace to the departed noble soul. –Dharam Vir Mohan Wedding Anniversary Greetings to Rzd. B.D. Bali sent by the late Maj. A.N. Chhibber (Retd.) is probably his last letter dated the 10th March, 2008 (received by Rzd. B.D. Bali on the day of Major Chhibber’s demise on the 14th March 2008). Respected Raizada B.D. Bali ji I came to know about “Golden Jubilee” celebration of your marriage, over joyed to hear it and pray to God Almighty to bless you for more such happy news. I am enclosing the photo of an event on 29 Dec. 1996 for your love and affection for all us. The slab is with us. Kindly suggest a proper place for its use. With sincere regards, –A.N. Chhibber
GMS Humble Tribute On Uthala Ceremony of Maj. Amarnath Chhibber The President of the General Mohyal Sabha Rzd. B.D. Bali on his own behalf, on behalf of all Office Bearers of the Sabha, on behalf of all members of the Managing Committee and on behalf of the entire Mohyal Community, express their profound grief and sorrow on the sudden, untimely and sad demise of one of their illustrious brother, Maj. Amarnath Chhibber (Retd.) son of the late Bakshi Narshing Das Chhibber at Meerut on Friday the 14th March, 2008. Throughout his life Maj. Chhibber had been associated very closely, with the GMS as one of its Pratisht Members and a Mohyal Mitter Trustee and, for sometime, a member of the Managing Committee of the Sabha. He has always been a dedicated, silent and sober worker, humane, humanitarian and a philanthropist, to the core. He was a great donor to the cause of the biradari and had, recently, given two donations of Rs. 1.5 lakh each, in the name of his late wife, Mrs. Nirmala Chhibber and in his own name for two rooms at Mohyal Sewa Sadan, Haridwar. Not only was Maj. Chhibber a kind and large-hearted person willing to share his fortunes with the needy, he was the rarest of the rare who steadfastly continued his magnanimity even in his death. In fact the pinnacle of his generosity starts with his death. Having a firm belief in the goodwill, reliability and integrity of the General Mohyal Sabha, the apex body of the Mohyals, Maj. Chhibber has left all his earthly belongings, both moveable and immoveable, to the GMS through a handwritten, duly witnessed and registered Will. The General Mohyal Sabha, declares, and affirms before this august assembly, on this solemn occasion, in the memory of the late Maj. Amarnath Chhibber, today, the 17th of March 2008 at Meerut that it shall prove itself worthy of the trust reposed in the Apex Body by the late Maj. Amarnath Chhibber and that it shall do all that is in its power and competence to manage the property left to its care by the late Maj. Chhibber for the welfare of the Community as per his wishes expressed in his last Will and Testament. The GMS reverently prays to Almighty God for the eternal bliss and peace of the soul of Maj. Amarnath Chhibber and to grant complete salvation to the departed soul and that of his late wife, Mrs. Nirmal Kumari Chhibber, free from the cycle of birth and death. Om Shanti, Shanti! However, if the exercise proves successful, lot of help in terms of money and material could come from individuals also. Many members spoke on the subject. Following suggestions were articulated: (c) The occasion should involve all sections of the Community.
